Lactose intolerance VS dairy allergy
In this Q&A session I address Natasha's question: "Am I allergic to dairy if I'm gluten intolerant?"
And the answer is pretty easy -- the fact that you are lactose intolerant has nothing to do with you being allergic to dairy. Here is the difference:
1. When you are lactose intolerant you are missing the enzyme (lactase) to break down milk sugar (lactose) properly. So since it is not broken down it causes all sorts of digestive issues.
2. When you are allergic to dairy you would be allergic to one (or both) of the dairy proteins -- casein or whey. In fact, all food allergies are immune system reactions to a protein in that food. And all foods have proteins of different kinds.
So as you see, lactose intolerance doesn't mean allergy to dairy.
However, I invite everyone to join us on one week dairy free challenge through my Facebook group to see if you, in fact, have allergy or sensitivity to dairy regardless of lactose intolerance.
